BBC Women in STEM

The BBC’s Women in STEM (WiSTEM) network is an Employee Resource Group (ERG) created in 2018 to encourage, develop and support more women into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) professions. Growing from 644 members in December 2018, the group now boasts 944 members of staff across the BBC and counting.

Built on shared values and purpose, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are voluntary, employee-led groups whose goal is to foster diverse and inclusive workplaces. They are aligned to the organization’s objectives. Leaders and participants in an ERG usually share one or more DEI characteristics along the lines of disability, ethnicity, gender, LGBTQI+ or religion, for example.

WiSTEM is one of several ERGs at the BBC. The network works with members across the organization to connect, empower and inspire them to rise up in their respective STEM fields.

The group is employee-led, overseen by a group of 18 board members, all of whom are volunteers. It works across three pillars: mentoring, knowledge sharing and networking.
