Delegates of the 86th General Assembly were welcomed by EU Commissioner Thierry Breton. On top of regular governance matters, there were 2 special sessions on the Olympics and local news:

  • Welcome speech from Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for Internal Market, followed by a panel discussion with EBU Members and stakeholders on “Shaping the Next Chapter of the Internet: New EU policies and why they matter to media”.
  • Special Sport session on “Olympics: Tokyo and beyond” moderated by ARD sports news anchor Julia Sharf. The panel will feature a live interview with British Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington, followed by a discussion with Members.
  • Election to fill a vacant seat on the Executive Board for the remainder of the 2021-2022 mandate.
  • Special News session on “Global Problems, Local Solutions – Why newsrooms are looking closer to home“ co-produced by NewsXchange. The session, bringing together both Member and external speakers, will explore why local news matters now more than ever for our audiences and what we can do to nurture and strengthen it at a time of momentous social change.
