News Assembly

The News Assembly is an opportunity for EBU Member staff to network with their fellow news directors, editors-in-chief and foreign editors. It is an annual meeting where influential experts exchange views about improving coverage, reducing costs and adapting to the ever-changing media market.

The News Assembly will start with a welcome cocktail on Tuesday 19 November, followed by meetings held on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 November.

The annual News Assembly offers news directors, editors in chief and foreign editors the opportunity to network and to exchange views about improving coverage, reducing costs and adapting to the changing media market.

The 13th News Assembly took place at the International Conference Centre in Edinburgh, on 12 and 13 November at the kind invitation of the BBC.

News Report 2018 - 50 Ways to Make it Better

This year’s News Assembly saw the launch of the "EBU News Report 2018: 50 ways to make it better" bringing to you 25 solutions and 50 real examples on building engagement and trust in public service journalism.

“We don’t want to present just another depressing report on how bad things are. We set out to discover 50 inspiring examples of how you can make the news media better.  How you can build engagement and trust”, say the authors, Professor of Practice Atte Jääskeläinen and media consultant Maike Olij, both experienced former public service media professionals from Finland and the Netherlands.

To find the best solutions, the authors first examined the challenges with leading experts in media and then surveyed over 70 senior executives in public service media to get their perspective on workable solutions. During the process, they collected around 150 proposals for solutions for the problems identified from both within public media and outside. Finally, 50 of the best, from 24 countries, were selected and presented in the report together with insights from those involved.

News Committee Elections Members Only

Following the departure of Fiona Dodd (ITN) from the News Committee, an election was held in compliance with the EBU Bye-Laws.

Delegates were invited to elect one member of the News Committee for a term of office (2018-2019). Mateusz Piekut (SVT) was elected as new committee member and took office immediately after the voting session during the News Assembly.
